Joseph S. Burch, PhD

Education: MD, AU/UGA Medical Partnership, current 3rd year student; Ph.D., Interdisciplinary Biomedical Sciences, UGA, 2016; B.S. Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, UGA, 2008

As an MD/PhD student, I studied how the body makes heme, the molecule that binds oxygen in the blood.  To further this, I investigated regulation of heme synthesis by  post-translational modifications and the metabolic changes that occur during red blood cell development. After completely two more years of medical school, I will complete a residency program and hope to conduct translational research in the future.
